Question about the Cantab VAXX / MASK Policy, and it's a good one

PLEASE NOTE: I'LL BE REMOVING THESE POSTS ABOUT THE CREEPY CANTAB AND CREEPY LANDLORD, AS WHAT WE CALL 'FLASH IN THE PAN' POSTS.

MY VISION FOR THIS SITE IS A PLETHORA OF NEW INTERVIEWS WITH ARTISTS THAT WE HAVE IN THE PIPELINE AND ALL THE GLORIOUS AIRPLAY WE ARE GETTING.   HOWEVER, IT'S GOOD TO GET THE NIGHTCLUB MISSTEPS LOGGED BECAUSE - TRULY - WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING TO CARE FOR OUR MUSIC SCENE  WITHOUT SOME DILETTANTE BAR MANAGER GETTING IN THE WAY OF YOUR PROMOTION!

E.G. writes: It’s a club. How does it make a difference if the unmasked have a drink in their hands or not? A Jack & coke isn’t a talisman against omicron.

J.V. responds:Because the club set the rules to be masked at all times; I'm pointing out the club hypocrisy.

They wanted one band fully VAXXED and that band pulled out because of the video with unmasked people not drinking or eating.

No matter what your beliefs, an establishment demanding VAXX and not adhering to its own policy of demanding masks, well, I get it.

But don't blame me, it's the current management scaring the bands away with such hypocrisy.

Mickey Bliss was going nuts replacing bands ...and how do you promote a New Year's Eve show with one band a week or so in advance when you've advertised for weeks two other bands?

They should have shut the club down and re-started in May ....but that's logic.

Spotify Loses 2.1 Billion in Market Value - Neil Young Hit Them Hard

As Neil Young, Joni Mitchell leave in protest of Joe Rogan’s podcast, Spotify loses more than $2.1 billion in market value: report

It has been a rough week for Spotify.

Neil Young pulled his musci from the platform on Wednesday due to it hosting Joe Rogan’s podcast which has been a home for the spread of COVID-19 vaccine misinformation. And, Friday, Joni Mitchell followed suit.

And, according to an article on Variety.com, the streaming service saw its market capitalization fall by “about $2.1 billion over a three-day span,” in the wake of it all.

In 1974 I performed at Cantab; in 1985 I Promoted FIRST BON JOVI SHOW IN BOSTON

 RESUME

IN 1974 I PERFORMED AT THE CANTAB

IN 1985 I PROMOTED THE FIRST
BON JOVI SHOW
IN BOSTON @ PARADISE

In 1973 I played the Coral Reef in Everett;
in 1974 The Cantab Lounge in Cambridge,
in 1985 I helped put together the FIRST show by Jon Bon Jovi at the Paradise Theater in Boston.

On or about 6 pm January 7, 2022 some jealous, angry bar manager, Kylie Connors, took a wrecking ball to the 6 year old Cantab page that I had built that had 6,000 hits when the club opened.

Jealous, angry Kylie Connors thinks my work is "old fashioned," according to Cambridge Day.

Hard work and honest efforts are hardly "old fashioned," they are effective. Thanks to Joe Viglione there was a line out the door on Opening Night.

Thanks to Cantab's substandard management, the opening night was delayed week after week, and a couple of nights after my huge opening, why did management NOT adhere to people wearing maks?? and why did COVID strike?? and ...allegedly they hushed it up. If true, how does that help you, dear club goer?

You want the truth or the new Cantab's fiction?

I submit and allege that GM Mike Cronin and his incompetent staff have done irreparable harm to our scene at this point in time. Bands are fleeing and Mickey Bliss is using a database that I constructed with no compensation to me to "fill in the blanks."

It's truly sad that Tim Dibble sees fit to hurt an elder person like me while promoting "Big Brother, Big Sister" and acting so charitable. It seems to be all about show, not substance. https://clubbohemianews.blogspot.com/2022/01/in-1974-i-performed-at-cantab-in-1985-i.html

I'VE FORGOTTEN MORE THAN MANY PUBLICISTS WILL EVER REMEMBER

My dear friend of 44 years, Mickey Bliss, libeling my efforts in Cambridge Day, efforts that he paid for over the years, mimicking idiotic Kylie Connors with her sad work ethic!

Mickey is culpable, I believe, in damaging promotion for the bands, calling hard work "old fashioned," when the Cantab Instagram account has barely anything on it! And probably less effort for lazy, crazy Kylie's buffoonery she calls a Facebook page.

Y'all saw how my "old fashioned" publicity gets results, and the artists get tons of promotion that benefits them!!! (jealous Kylie doesn't know the first thing about promotion, so she casts aspersions behind Dibble's fancy, fancy lawyers, Koward Kylie!)

The unprepared staff is probably costing the club a small fortune in alleged lost revenue.  How much $$$$ is really coming in?

Who loses?  The music community

Who loses?   The artists who need real promotion, not some woman offering me a drink while we were all "ON THE CLOCK" after a luncheon.

BAR MANAGER AT THE CANTAB
INCOMPETENT AND BUNGLING
KYLIE CONNORS
LUSTED FOR MY JOB

KYLIE CONNORS HURTS THE ARTISTS
IRREPARABLE HARM TO EACH SHOW!

SHE CAN'T PROMOTE HER WAY OUT OF A PAPER BAG

SHE TOOK A WRECKING BALL TO THE MAJESTIC CANTAB PAGE THAT I HAD BUILT OVER THE PAST SIX YEARS

THE CANTAB LOUNGE HAS HAD A
COVID SCARE

REPEATEDLY FAILED TO OPEN THE VENUE ON TIME

AND NOW WITH A JEKYLL AND HYDE GM
AND BAR MANAGER KYLIE CONNORS
BANDS APPEAR TO BE FLEEING THE CLUB

FLEEING

WITH THREATS THAT THEY WILL NEVER PLAY THE ROOM AGAIN, THE IRREPARABLE HARM IS WHAT IS BEING DONE TO THE BOSTON MUSIC SCENE.

When my dear pal Andrea is DEMANDING Vaxx cards, yet her video of a great band, S.R., shows people dancing without masks, yet she's demanding a VAXX card from every member of B.S.R. (initials used as the artists, like me, are the victims here,) and B.S.R. rightfully cancels, one of our best bands, you see the problems that their lawyers are DEMANDING I do not talk about.  They are attempting to HIDE this First Amendment information from the public that they, I believe, are irreparably hurting during a PANDEMIC.

ALLEGEDLY DRINKING ON THE JOB,
CONNORS INVITED ME TO HAVE SOME TEQUILA

I DON'T DRINK ON THE JOB
ALCOHOL IS DEADLY

READ THE CAMBRIDGE DAY ARTICLE TO SEE THE LIBELOUS ATTACKS BY THE CANTAB SOUNDMAN/BOOKING AGENT

KYLIE CONNORS, PUBLICIST GENIUS OR FRAUD?

Tim Dibble needs to FIRE MIKE CRONIN and KYLIE CONNORS and start fresh.

The club should shut down until May with the blizzards and Covid and a crew not able to deal with adversity.  It's a damn mess.

Mickey Bliss needs to stop the ganja...seriously.

Talk about an imbalance.  You want to socialize with it, fine, but when people overuse alcohol, marijuana or both there's a definite problem, in this journalist's humble opinion.   My advice: go seek help!

I promise you, people, I have never fallen asleep behind a soundboard in my 50 years of recording like your pal and mine, Mickey Marijuana, but that's me.

Sleeping on the job?  Or nodding out on the job!

The new Cantab: they offer that I can drink on the job....problem is, I don't drink!   Yet a soundman legendary for nodding out on the job sneaking some weed in at "the office" in the back, while supposedly working for a community with the P.A. out of control, and the engineer nodding off.

Great.

The Cantab Lounge provides no real publicity to the artists who perform there, according to an article in Cambridge Day, has shut down due to Covid, bungling management that kept pushing the opening date back, and policies that are counterproductive ...  tell Tim Dibble and his wife to FIRE MIKE CRONIN and KYLIE CONNORS and we'll talk!

Cambridge Day Magazine editor Marc Levy Rolls Out the Mismanagement of the Cantab Lounge

It followed the supposedly permanent closing of the Cantab after the coronavirus shut down indoors entertainment in 2020 and, under new owner Tim Dibble, a hard and expensive renovation after decades in which the club saw little maintenance. That caused repeated false starts in relaunch dates; when doors finally did reopen Dec. 15, they closed again for a week almost immediately after a Covid exposure.

Grateful Ted / SMUGGLER The Time Machine CD

Dinky Dawson produced the band SMUGGLER who appeared on
Boston Rock & Roll Anthology Vol. 3. 58 minutes and 52 seconds of their
music is here, released in 1999, recorded between 1982-1999

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:kbfoxqq0ldte

Reviewby Joe Viglione

As musicians from the past get the urge to release new music, many are finding the additional space available on compact disc to be just the place to put previous efforts. That is a blessing for fans of good music, and Ted Solovicos of Boston's Smuggler does just that, giving the world six songs from one of Smuggler's three major recording sessions in the '80s and eight new productions for almost one hour's worth of sound. Going under the moniker Grateful Ted, the CD features a ticket stub on the back cover from when the band opened for Bon Jovi at the Paradise Theater in Boston. This was when "Runaway" was just breaking for Jon Bon Jovi and Smuggler had a bigger following than the guy who would go on to sell millions of records. Having the legacy documented on this fine release makes it that much more of a treasure. Solovicos is a more-than-competent songwriter, and with Mach Bell of the Joe Perry Projectreleasing Last Man Standing in 2002 and more music being recorded and released by Hirsh Gardner of New England and Rick Berlin from Berlin Airlift/Luna, as well as another Joe Perry lead singer, Charlie Farren, the then-and-now approach not only preserves these great sounds, it gives those who appreciate these honest efforts all the more to listen to. "Sweet and Innocent" has a nice swing with the jazzy piano from Richard Meader and some shocking lyrics: "Your sweet and innocent love/I hear your friends are all queer," and something indiscernible about lesbians; not very politically correct and not very nice, but that's part of the product. Musically it is Bachman Turner Overdrive-lite, catchy tunes from the major songwriter of an important suburban band from the Boston area's early-'80s scene. "Don't Burn the Witch" has that punch Smuggler was all about, and it is one of the CD's best tracks, a thumping, snarling cruncher. The vibe-infested "Love Is Strange" is also a highlight. Interesting new and old music makes up The Time Machine and it's a decent time capsule preserving the work of a group who made some noise by making noise. Fleetwood Mac engineer/producer Dinky Dawsonrecorded a Solovicos tune, "In the Long Run," released on Boston Rock & Roll Anthology, Vol. 3 in 1984, not included here. It was the only other bit of Smuggler material in release at the time of this release.

Mixed Emotions of the 21st Century

19 tracks

Back in the 1980sTed Solovicos rocked out in the band Smuggler. Jump forward to the new millennium and the artist formerly known as Grateful Ted performed in a duo called Britannica, nailing down British rock, the Moody Blues being a favorite, among many others. Which brings us to this disc overflowing with original compositions – resplendent in a cover that looks like artist Hieronymus Bosch streamlining Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band succinct pop tunes “No Tomorrows” and “Together” – with its naughty backing vocals lifted from John Lennon’s “Girl,” harken back to the days of Denny Laine’s Moody Blues, the U.K. Kaleidoscope with Eddy Pumer (not to be confused with the American Kaleidoscope) and so many more. “Sorrow” is not the famous David Bowie cover of Rick Derringer’s The McCoys’ 45, it’s subdued anger at the world condition, the war in Iraq/ Afghanistan and other atrocities. Solovicos packs the compact disc with a plethora of ideas ranging from happiness to tragedy, an introspective diary of his own personal experiences along with perspectives on the present past and future. “Love Dreams,” track seven, follows in the vein of the exquisite “No Tomorrows” and “Together,” light pop songs which show this artist at his best. “I Got My Mind On You” adds some Spanish influence, the theme of love and fun going back – stylistically – to The Tokens/ Jay & the Americans. “Why” combines the heavy keyboards with Ted’s authoritative acoustic guitar and intriguing vocal work. Nineteen songs released at one time with so much music in the jungle of the wild frontier of the internet is obviously a musical statement that takes more than one sitting to absorb. 21st Century (with its three bonus tracks from the 20th Century, additional material a hallmark of Solovicos’ releases) is a diary put to tape – “Give Me Another Night” with its exploding electric guitars indicative of each element that comprises this collection of thoughts that are most personal. Mastered by Butterscott bassist and former Smuggler pal Joel Simches, it is well-crafted stuff from a veteran of the New England music scene. A cover of The Kinks “20th Century Man” would have been the frosting on the cake… maybe for the next disc. (Joe Viglione)

Playing in a Blizzard - a Music Business Editorial from Joe Viglione

Thanks to Chris D. for enhancing the photo January 29 2022

Blizzard of Oz...

Musicians want to play onstage.   I get it.  After half a century of performing in front of people, be it the basement and garage in 1972 to The Coral Reef in Everett in 1973, it's been fifty years of mayhem.   The shows that truly mattered are ones where major acts provided the draw.

Opening for Peter Noone's Tremblers, Rick Derringer, hard rock guitarist Pat Travers (born a month before me!,) Black Flag, Stiv Bators and his Lords of the New Church, Rick Berlin's Luna, lesbian folk singer Phranc (we did Gay Pride, Worcester 1998 or so,) Johnny Thunders of the New York Dolls, 49 performances at The Paradise - Boston's Best Concert Club, there's some insane need for rock musicians to want to perform onstage BEFORE getting a hit record.   Look, from the Doors to Jethro Tull the stories are legend of no one showing up for them when they were unknowns.

Given this experience, why would I want to subject myself to some pothead soundman (and alleged ex heroin addict) falling asleep at the soundboard, too happy with the ganja to respect the musicians and stay away during a show?   Soundmen, good soundmen, are few and far between, with the volume at excruciating levels, and extra loud radio in between sets.  So much for a social gathering.

Add inept and bungling staff - one crazed sound person in the 1980s shrieking her head off at bands, the perilous world of rock and roll most difficult to navigate with distracting booze, wild women, marijuana and insane club management throughout the decades standing in your way of your performance art.

We musicians don't think to have a contract that calls for soundpeople who won't nod off due to smoking (weed) on the job, or selling heroin behind the bar like at that venue across from the Boston Garden in the 1980s.   The owner is now deceased and is praised as some kinda "saint" after his alleged "redemption."   That individual tried to stab me with a knife when I refused to let him get to one of my artists. I had shut the door to the recording studio in time as he was coming at me.  The artist eventually figured it out and went and got the heroin, right after I got a phone call from the club owner ..."Joe, I was coming at you with a knife. I was going to stick you."

And you think the blizzard out there right now  (10:20 pm, Sat. Jan 29, 2022) is bad...

Going to a church that frowns on drugs and alcohol, as long as I've been in the music business, I see these events like a seagull over the water.   Is this the way to get a recording contract and become rich and famous?  Hardly.

The persistent of us reshape our world.  While recording my new CD I'm planning on a feature film to promote the music.  That way I'm in control.

Some Covid infested nightclub that wants to hush up a situation that - allegedly - they are required to be upfront about to minimize exposure, that's not going to get you your platinum albums, no sir.

______________________________________________________________

    MOVIE MAGIC

Yes, I have scripts on paper, in my head and about to be committed to the visual medium.  If they get picked up, I can make a buck.  If they don't, YouTube will have them for posterity.  However you have the control and you are not at the mercy of some lunatic GM screaming and yelling, or some unqualified person with a huge ego making your life miserable because, clearly, she's miserable, or some soundman nodding off at the soundboard, or door woman collecting the cash nodding off from heroin at that 1980s establishment noted above, key word e-STAB-lishment.

Was walking down the street and started saying hi to all these people I knew from the Rathskellar almost a decade before.  It was like a class reunion, but unlike Ginger Ale me, they looked like they were in The Night of the Living Dead.  Walking zombies.  It was weeks before I realized they were all going to that club to buy smack, not to do rock and roll.   Way too much junkie business for me.

________________________________________________________

      FILM, the Better Solution

I was about to get the band together to perform Get Yer Ya Ya's Out by the Rolling Stones, in its entirety.   My once or twice annual appearance these days.  But the thought of going into an environment where I'm wearing a mask, where a mask is required, but the venue flipped the bird to their own requirement and too many people were not obeying the rules.   I never went back...and the very next night, COVID happened.  The story is in a local newspaper tonight.   Literally, you take your life into your hands if you face COVID or a club manager attempting to stab you while looking you in the eye in the 1980s, or a club manager/booking agent in 2022 stabbing you in the back!

At least the heroin-dealer with the knife had more honor than the sound man nodding off, rife with marijuana through his system, on the job, other club manager drinking on the job in the middle of the day, and - somehow - I'm the guy they cast libelous aspersions at.

As y'all know, I'm building an office where we will be editing films and adding soundtracks, and some of the top names in the industry work with me (the music is out there, with the credits.)   There's a level of professionalism that is much more fun, much more exciting, and can give you a return on investment.

Untrustworthy and sometimes dangerous individuals yelling at you because only five people showed up, or arguing with you that "you'll never play this club again..." how immature and destructive.

Along with the alcohol and drug abuse naturally sober people (and sober people because they HAD to get sober) experience is bad enough.   Add Elder abuse to that, and smears and attacks because you did a GREAT job, not just a good job, but a GREAT job, well, thank God that I'm me and can adjust and go back and play with professionals.

Because what I just experienced is amateur night and I need no voodoo or black magic, it's all so out to lunch unless Mr. and Mrs. Mommy and Daddy Millionaires keep pumping money into a black hole, with COVID, lack of attendance, and the escapees from the asylum running the business, businesses like that are going to be just another another casualty on the rock and roll highway.
