1)With 4 minutes they could have easily boarded the Reliant with weaponry, transported the Genesis out into space scattering its atoms and molecules
2)What Captain would let the Reliant come close to them with shields down. Ridiculous. You have no idea if Klingons or Romulans had hijacked the ship
It's a great movie chock full of vignettes, like the death of Spock, the Genesis cave, it's a fantastic trilogy of Khan, the Search for Spock and Save the Whales but the killing of Spock, and later, David Kirk, son of Captain Kirk, could have been a useful character for future - even the killing of Khan, scriptwriters do what they want. In the filmmaking business it's about saving money and the plots here made money and saved money in the making.
Still, it could have been a brilliant film instead of a very good film. It feels better than it is because of so many misfires with the franchise. Star Trek should have been about sequels to the original show, not references all the time. Give the people what they want, and they didn't.
