Starbucks Labor Practices? How about a GM's Nutty Tirade Against Mickey Bliss on Opening Night of the Cantab Lounge

 GM Mike Cronin was Yelling Bloody Murder, as usual, in the back of the Cantab, while Mickey Bliss was working hard to untangle Cronin's alleged 15,000.00 Edsel of a Sound System.

Cronin sure can pick 'em, Kylie Connors being Exhibit A in regard to bad hirings.

So Cronin is screaming in the din of the Chicken Slacks onstage waiting for what seemed like an hour "I PAID A LOT OF MONEY FOR MICKEY BLISS TO LEARN THE SOUND SYSTEM."

WHAT AN INSUFFERABLE JERK

MOST GM'S WOULD LEARN THE SOUND SYSTEM AS WELL...HONEST GM  TYPES, THAT IS.

WE KNEW SOMETHING WAS UP WHEN IT TOOK CRONIN 6 WEEKS OR SO TO PAY ME ...HAVING ME DO WORK FOR FREE, WHILE, OF COURSE, YELLING AND SCREAMING AT ME ON THE PHONE, AND THEN TELLING ME HE 'LOVES" ME...SHEESH

WHAT?  A MAN CRUSH ON AN OLDER GUY?   I WALK INTO THE CELTICS' OWNER'S PARTY AND MIKE LOOKS AT ME AND SAYS "YOU LOOK LIKE A MILLION BUCKS."

PHOENIX (AP) — Federal labor officials have asked a judge to force Starbucks Corp. to reinstate three union activists at its Phoenix location, alleging that the coffee giant engaged in unfair labor practices, documents show.

The National Labor Relations Board's Phoenix regional director, in a filing Friday in U.S. District Court in Arizona, sought an injunction that would make Starbucks hire back its three employees — who were three of four members of the union organizing committee.

The NLRB's petition is the latest blow to the coffee chain as locations nationwide seek to unionize. Workers at the flagship Seattle location voted Thursday to form a union, as did baristas in Colorado on Friday.

The Cantab claimed, falsely, that they owned Club Bohemia.

 They couldn't and they didn't.

 

Mickey Bliss hired one of my attorneys to send them a cease and desist. 

 So they screwed Mickey and the community by re-naming the joint Cantab Undergound. 

As there have been questions I am issuing this statement 3:30 pm 4-23-22: I got a weird phone call on a Friday night at 6:30 pm to hand over ALL the Club Bohemia passwords from bar manager Kylie Connors. So I called GM Michael Cronin who screamed bloody murder at me that HE "OWNS CLUB BOHEMIA." No paper work, nothing, just wanting to steal Mickey Bliss's club out from under him, and my decade plus of work on these pages (they did wreck at least two of them.) So I called Mickey's daughter, who is an attorney, and she told me I did the right thing and don't do ANYTHING. Mickey was running sound and couldn't be reached as he had no cell phone. Mickey was furious the next day and told me I did the right thing and feed them silence all weekend. I took his legal advice as Mickey has represented me in a legal case when I was protecting animals, and has done dozens of legal writings for me when I shut down TV3 Medford. Mickey has given me approximately over 100 hours of legal advice over the past decade and a half. He's a brilliant lawyer and should have handled this on his own. Hiring one of my attorneys was Mickey not wanting to ruffle feathers at the Cantab and it served him well: he's still there. Kylie Connors, meanwhile, was texting me constantly demanding the passwords. Mickey hired one of my other lawyers (Mickey wasn't the only lawyer working with me) who sent Tim Dibble a cease and desist. When Cronin couldn't steal the pages and the name, Kylie and crew changed the name to Cantab Underground. Cronin laid me off around January 11th and told me to collect unemployment, and told Mickey he would bring me back when they had money. Cronin allegedly spent the money like a drunken sailor and, yes, I'm in the process of filing against him for the abuse. Mickey told me to file for unemployment: what they didn't know is that BECAUSE I gave the club a $100.00 discount per week I couldn't file for unemployment, due to my kindness. So I wrote to Tim Dibble the owner that I would ONLY come back when he fires Cronin and Connors. His failure to do so is why the promotion is useless currently with social butterfly Kylie Connors feeding her own ego and not doing the job I did. The bands were upset with management and were bailing on the club - Mike Cronin kept canceling opening night, which meant Mickey had to re-book, and then Andrea Ballotta was demanding legal forms and bands were revolting about giving their social security #. The players were NOT ready for prime time. Mickey even advised me at the beginning that he felt they would take our resources and bounce both of us. Their egos out of control and enormous. I'm glad some bands are having fun and must say the club security is fantastic and that I miss those fellows and the other bartenders, but that, my friends, is the nightclub business. Tim Dibble's crew is not ready for prime time. Not like when I produced shows for Cantones and Don Law(Paradise) and Harry Booras at the Channel. . Those professionals treated me well for a very long time and they have my love and appreciation for it.

Here is just a little of what I've done to help Boston Rock Music, the plans I had for the Cantab are amazing but when a GM named Mike Cronin would scream and yell elder abuse at a hard working man he would later say he "loved," that kind of Jekyll and Hyde persona is not conducive to operating ANY business, let alone a nightclub with licenses galore.  Don't let that crackpot near me.  Cronin and Kylie Connors did much to destroy the momentum I built for the club, I swear on the Bible.

JV Writes back: It has its merits. Hope Tim Dibble hires a professional crew, though. I launched the rebirth and we had a line out the door. The bar manager wanted to destroy this page and all other pages and do a "modern promotion" which was, no promotion at all and her claiming she was "publicist." What a mess. And who suffers? The bands and the audiences. So very tragic during covid and with clubs shutting down. Looks like a tax write-off for some zillionaire instead of a club

Promotion at the Cantab has PLUMMETED with Insane Idea of P.r. and Lazy, Unethical Management Fumbling and Stumbling

 They've used and abused Mickey Bliss, who is now a parody of himself.

The bar maid is nuts, she wanted to steal the job of a professional, and has only 58 people responding to the legendary Perfect Example band.

Horrendous.   They screwed the bands with that bar manager spitting at a real publicist and too incompetent to fill his shoes.

What a sad state of affairs for the Boston music scene.

Guitarist John Kalishes passed away on January 9, 2004. It was a shock to those of us who found life at The Rathskellar in Kenmore Square such an important part of our reality. Many of the 70s scenesters got to meet John when he was a member of SUSAN, the band which featured the Leland brothers' rhythm section flanked by guitarists John Kalishes and Tom Dickie. When the band signed to RCA they didn't bring John with them - and that was a mistake. His crushing leads were an essential part of their sound, as evidenced by his presence on the LIVE AT THE RAT album. None of the power found on "Ride Away", one of their two tracks on that live double lp, is found on their "Falling In Love Again" 1979 release. Without the band "Susan" John Kalishes continued his efforts, jamming with the legendary U.F.O., making tapes with Riser and Foreign Legion, eventually joining the late Ben Orr of The Cars for a phenomenal stretch of gigs, a few preserved on videotape. Full House Recording issued a Riser CD "Resurrection" in 2000 and local singer/songwriter Paul Hultman interviewed John for a cable television program while at the record release party for "Resurrection". 

Sandy Higgins, moderator of Charlie Farren's Yahoogroup, had these memories of John: "I only had the pleasure of meeting John Kalishes once or twice. I never really got to know him all that well. However, my neighbor across the street from me, Tommy Fey, knew him very well & played in several bands with him over the years. Tommy came across the street several years ago to ask me if I wouldn't mind letting John use my 100W Marshall head to take on tour with the Ben Orr Band overseas. I told him I had no problem with that. John seemed very trustworthy, and I wasn't using it at the time...so, why not? When John came back to the states, so did my Marshall - in perfect condition. Only thing was, he had to cut the power cord due to the different plugs over in Japan - but he did splice & tape it back together!" One of John's great strengths along with songwriting and furious guitar leads was record production. He captured the essence of the garage musician's triumph in something called "I'm Still Standing". Charlie Farren sings the lead vocal on this track co-written with his friend Adrian Medeiros. 

 

Adrian and John also worked with Boston guitarist Barry Goudreau and Cars members Greg Hawkes and Ben Orr on a fantastic song called "Send Me". His brother Vin Kalishes sent an official message from the family: "John Kalishes, one of the moving forces of the Boston Rock & Roll scene since the late '60s, died unexpectedly on January 9, 2004 following a brief illness. Born in 1950 in Dorchester, a neighborhood of the city of Boston, John began studying the guitar while in third grade, immediately showing his great potential. At age 15 Kalishes formed his first band, the Rhymney Blues, which played "the high school dance scene." 

 

John Kalishes was a graduate of Catholic Memorial High School and The University Of Massachusetts at Boston. 

 

In the 1970s and 1980s Kalishes worked as the booking agent for "The Rat" in Kenmore Square and "The Bellboy" in Scituate Harbor in addition to writing music, engineering and performing. His bands included "Susan" then "Foreign Legion" and in later years, "Riser". 

 

Over the years he recorded with some of the best known artists in rock & roll music, on occasion using the alias of "Mississippi Blind Driveway." (John may have worked with Toy Caldwell as well as a member or two of "The Band" - Lisa). In recent years John was affiliated with the late Ben Orr of The Cars, Ben and John co-writing a number of songs. While touring as ORR, playing coast to coast, John was Orr's guitar player and band-leader. In 2002 and 2003 John worked on his solo album, Mirage, after building his own state of the art facility, "Black Hole Studios." Mirage was released two months before his passing. His wife, Judith Wilson, passed away a few years after John's passing.

In an unplanned career move John began co-composing and producing television and movie soundtracks with his dear friend Jon Butcher. 

 

John is survived by his brother Vincent J. Kalishes III, and his nephew Vincent J. Kalishes IV.

John requested that he be remembered by making a donation in his name to his nephew's school "The Perkins School for The Blind" located at 175 North Beacon St., Watertown, MA 02172.
