Millis Tribe (Empty County Band)
Returning to Millis as a Musician 30 years later surreal. Steve Kuchinsky returning with 3 more Millis natives?

Legendary!!!

Victory Lane is an Iconic bar for Millis for us growing up its where you met your long-awaited friends.

Behind Victory Lane is where young hung out with them before you even went to a bar. The railroad tracks at night, Millis Bowl or the Band Stand where those engraved or wrote their deepest thoughts.

Back in the day it was like family maybe even better.

There weren’t judgments made only plans, jokes, music and even sports at times, football, street hockey. Millis is for us is our first kiss, our first everything.

I grew up watching the older guys play music in my basement, Howie, Dovi, Piccarello, Ken Kuchinsky of course. We watched the Hagers, Mayors, Provosts, Lambert master the stages in parks and in school. These kids were 16-17 years of age and loaded with talent and I wanted to do that. How does one get to that point?

I began to brush paths with guys like Pat Fogarty, Eric Gallagher, Ian Casucci and Eric Johnson who once Co-owned Victory Lane at one point I believe. It really began the start of understanding what it meant to be involved in a group. They were all very talented and for once in my early to late teens things fell into place musically. Later Marcus Rodriguez, Eric Gallagher and eventually Jeff Kraby three from Millis all teamed up and formed a band called Numbskull.

Playing Victory Lane means reunion!

On April 6Th I will be joined by musician percussionist Jeff Krabey, athlete amongst other things related to Millis a family of sports, coaches, musicians and cheering from what I can remember.

We also welcome two brothers from Millis, lead guitarist Maximillian and bass player Augustus Palaza.

They were from a younger generation of kids who were country boys as well and as far back as people can remember they tell me stories of them having Axes in there hands. I’m guessing both kinds! Man can these guys play is all I ever think when I listen.

I’m proud to be a part of this tribe of Rock-n-Roll natives.

So this show is more than just any show it is historical, notable, mentionable, and worthy event. Whether you like country, rock, metal, or blues you will indeed love the familiar yet original sound of Empty County Band.

Is Millis in fact the inspiration for an empty county?

That’s for our fans to decide! April 6th we play for those we’ve lost and for those who play no more…

The album cover of Miracles is a striking gold on blue with imagery of modern technology meeting the old world. VU meters adorn steps next to a mini sphinx with boats and electric/acoustic guitars in the water. The first song on this disc should've been a hit; "Remember" begins with a hard rock explosion and Sumac exploring what the liner notes call her "extraordinary five-octave voice." There are no lyrics here, just Sumac's vocal flights which ride over rock & roll textures. Although the rock here sounds like it is straight out of the Berklee College of Music, jazz influenced organ courtesy of Richard Person, Chuck Cowan's guitar, the bass of Roger Cowan, and Skippy Switzer's drums all shine here. On "Let Me Hear You," Sumac reaches down into her gut and comes up with a sound Peter Frampton utilized on his 1976 hit "Show Me the Way," the amazing thing is, she didn't have to use the mouth instrument employed by Frampton! "Tree of Life has keyboards licks from a Monkees album track ("(Look Out) Here Comes Tomorrow"), while "Azure Sands" on side two emulates "Music to Watch Girls By," the Bob Crewe hit from 1967, with an on-key Yoko Ono, that being Sumac. The similarity to Ono is worth noting. Where she is all over the map, Sumac is controlled, passionate. Ten tracks is a bit much of vocal exercises, chirps, and incessant styling, but the music on this album with bandleader Les Baxter has merit.

SUNNY
WRITTEN BY BOBBY HEBB
PERFORMED BY TOOTS AND THE MAYTALS
JOE VIGLIONE REVIEW
Toots
This two minute and fifty-four second rendition of Bobby Hebb’s “Sunny” is jam-packed with rock, reggae and a splashy psychedelic guitar, imagine Sly and the Family Stone in slow motion with a thought-provoking vocal and solid groove. The mix is terrific, swirling textures under a soulful lead vocal that brings this song into a wonderful new dimension.  With over 1400 recorded (and YouTube) performances it is amazing that Hebb’s masterpiece continues to find new flavorings and vibrations. The solid drumbeat here allows the backing vocals and rising instrumentation to weave an entirely new chapter for this familiar melody.  Captivating is the only way to describe it.
