Bob Colby Presents at Club Bohema
Thursday August 12, 2013
For my fourth monthly show at the Cantab, we have three psych acts (two local, one from Maine),with some Latin/Americana flavor to start off, again for just $7!. This is my first show to draw from the vibrant local psych community, so I'm especially excited this month.
SET TIMES: (scheduled, might start a bit later)
08:00-08:45 SÓ SOL
09:00-09:45 JEFF BEAM
10:00-10:45 THE FREEWAYS
11:00-11:45 MOONTOWERS
$7/21+
MOONTOWERS: Our headliners will end the night on an energy high, with a propulsive roar that might remind you just a bit of the Velvet Underground in its full Exploding Plastic Inevitable-era glory. Ah, but the Velvets never had a sitarist…

THE FREEWAYS describe themselves as "A neo-psychedelic road trip with velvety female vocals, retro-reverb, and tape delay…". Writing in The Noise, Francis Dimenno describes them as "a band specializing in short songs evocative less of ’60s psychedelia than of the nouveau-psychedelia movement of the early 1980s…", further citing Karen Zanes vocal style as "somewhat reminiscent of Signe Anderson". Both descriptions are apt, and their album THE FREEWAYS makes an excellent case for a new paisley revival.

JEFF BEAM: Jeff Beam is from Portland, Maine, and you may recognize him from his stints as a bass player for The Milkman's Union and as an occasional accompanist (on guitar) for Lady Lamb the Beekeeper. His bio describes his solo work as "melodic experimental pop music tinged with kaleidoscopic soundscapes, inspired by the songwriting of The Beatles, Elliott Smith, & The Kinks, and the sonic textures by the likes of Olivia Tremor Control, Deerhunter, & The Flaming Lips". His latest release is JEFF BEAM'S LOUDSPEAKER WALLPAPER.
